It's human nature to be detached, and at some point the vast scale of such things almost detracts from, rather than adds to, the emotional impact. I'm not sure I'd put it quite as you do, but it's the misfortunes of oneself and those who are personally physically or emotionally close that to oneself that are inevitably going to affect one more.
